Citizen of Georgia, Nikolos Berianidze, who fought on the side of Ukraine as part of the "Azov" regiment, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the so-called "Supreme Court" of the self-proclaimed "DPR," which is controlled by Russia.
This was reported by the publication "Current Time," referencing the Investigative Committee of Russia reports.
According to the Russian investigation, Berianidze served in the Georgian army and participated in military operations conducted by NATO countries in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is claimed that he arrived in Kyiv no later than 2016 and joined the "Azov" regiment.
“He was provided with personal firearms, ammunition, uniforms, and military-grade special equipment, after which he began performing the duties of a military instructor in the specified nationalist armed formation,” the Investigative Committee's statement reads.
After the onset of the full-scale invasion, Berianidze was in Mariupol. The Investigative Committee claims that in March 2022, the man allegedly shot at three Russian servicemen who were "ensuring public safety in the territory of the DPR." After the full-scale invasion began, Berianidze remained in Mariupol.
Berianidze was found guilty of "mercenary activities" and "attempting to kill a serviceman."
It is worth noting that in December of last year, the so-called "court" of the "DPR" sentenced Ukrainian defender of Mariupol, 25-year-old Oleg Abdyukov, to 24 years in prison in temporarily occupied Donetsk.
Earlier, ZMINA reported that in the so-called Supreme Court in occupied Donetsk, 14 defenders of Mariupol were sentenced to a strict regime colony in the first half of December this year.
