Efforts to extinguish the fire at the site of the Russian drone strike on the territory of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant continue.

This was reported by the State Emergency Service.

The Russian drone struck the Chernobyl sarcophagus on the night of February 14 during a massive attack on Ukraine, and Ukrainian officials have publicly stated since last year that the Russian army is targeting nuclear power plants.

On the day of the attack, the State Emergency Service provided updates on the aftermath. Since then, the strike site has been monitored by a drone, which revealed at least three additional fire hotspots, prompting the resumption of firefighting efforts.

Despite this, no deterioration in the radiation situation has been recorded. You can monitor this data via the link.

Earlier, the IAEA stated that the Russian strike on the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant left a 6-meter diameter hole in the sarcophagus. The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate indicated that the Russian strike has led to instability in the structures of the old sarcophagus, which was built immediately after the disaster at the plant.

Recall that last year, President Vladimir Zelensky mentioned how Russians use Chinese satellites to photograph Ukrainian nuclear power plants. These statements came amid reports of over a hundred Russian missiles and drones flying past Ukrainian nuclear power plants, posing a threat.

ZMINA explained why Russian nuclear blackmail remains unanswered by the world and why "Rosatom" – the holding company that is officially supposed to handle civilian nuclear companies in Russia – instead aids in actions such as the occupation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
