A number of senators from both the Democratic and Republican parties in the U.S. have criticized President Donald Trump's statements regarding the war in Ukraine.

ZMINA reports what is known.

The new U.S. presidential administration recently held talks with Russia without inviting Ukraine and the EU, and following the meeting, several contradictory statements were made.

For instance, the blame for the attack on Ukraine was shifted onto Ukraine itself, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was labeled a dictator because elections are not taking place in the country due to the war.

This occurs despite the fact that the violation of international law by Russia is recognized by the majority of countries worldwide, and the International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants, including for Russian leader Putin. Furthermore, last year, when Russia held its so-called “elections,” several countries did not recognize them, and PACE recognized Putin's regime as a dictatorship that threatens peace.

Senator from Vermont Bernie Sanders reacted to the new rhetoric of the Trump administration. He recorded a video titled “A Sad Day in American History,” in which he stated that the American people are witnessing how the U.S. president “has allied with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to undermine Ukraine's independence and its democracy.”

In commenting on Trump's words, Sanders pointed out that the president is lying about things like Zelensky's approval rating and the volume of aid provided by the U.S. to Ukraine.

“In this critical moment in our history, I hope that every American, regardless of political views, will say ‘yes’ to democracy, ‘no’ to oligarchy, and ‘no’ to authoritarianism,” Sanders stated.

At the time of writing this news, Sanders' video on YouTube had been viewed by over 800,000 people.

Trump's remarks were also criticized by Republican senators. For example, Tom Tillis stated that such rhetoric “ultimately allows for moral equivalence to be established between Zelensky and Putin,” which concerns the politician.

Support for Zelensky was also expressed by Republican senator Susan Collins.

Critical comments regarding Trump's statements also came from Congressman Don Bacon and Senator Roger Wicker.
