The number of civilian casualties from the shelling by Russian military forces in Zaporizhzhia on January 8 has risen to 15.
This was reported by the secretary of the Zaporizhzhia City Council and acting mayor Regina Kharchenko.
A severely injured woman died in the hospital after medical staff fought for her life until the very end. Kharchenko expressed her condolences to the family of the deceased.
The Russian shelling of Zaporizhzhia on January 8 was the most extensive since 2022. The high number of casualties and injuries, which exceeds one hundred, is attributed to the tactics of the Russian army, which struck the city with guided aerial bombs during the so-called peak hours when people were returning home from work.
Some individuals were injured and killed in a tram and a minibus that were damaged by debris.
Investigators have opened a criminal case regarding the shelling under the article concerning violations of the laws and customs of war, connected with intentional murder. Those responsible for the attack face life imprisonment.
In the Zaporizhzhia region, the number of fatalities has significantly increased since September of last year, since Russians began launching guided aerial bombs at Zaporizhzhia, as noted by local OVA officials. The rise in civilian casualties in Ukraine due to the use of such weapons has previously been documented by the UN.
It is important to remember that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Russian military forces have killed 12,400 civilians in Ukraine and injured over 28,000 people. Among the deceased are 669 children, and in just the first three quarters of the year, more minors were killed or injured than in all of 2023.
