“According to preliminary information, on December 22, 2024, a telegram channel published details about the incident on the temporary front in the Volnovakha area. During an artillery shelling, four Ukrainian defenders were forced to take shelter in a private house,” – the statement reads.

After being surrounded by Russian troops, the Ukrainian defenders exited the building and were captured.

Two of the prisoners of war were left lying on the ground, while the other two were taken to the road. Subsequently, all four Ukrainian soldiers were shot.

The Prosecutor General's Office has launched an investigation into the military crime that resulted in the loss of life (part 2 of article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The maximum penalty is life imprisonment.

It should be noted that on December 22, the Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, announced that he would send letters to the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross regarding the latest shooting of five captured Ukrainian defenders. It later became known that four prisoners of war had been killed.

Earlier, ZMINA reported that in October and November of this year, law enforcement agencies registered 13 criminal proceedings related to the shooting of 54 Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russians. This accounts for about one-third of the total number of cases initiated in 2024 concerning such incidents.
