The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, held urgent consultations with key officers and Israeli intelligence specialists against the backdrop of the collapse of Bashar Assad's regime's army in Syria. The discussions centered on the potential downfall of Assad's regime due to the advancing opposition forces and the threats this may pose for Israel.
This was reported by the Israeli publication The Times of Israel. It is noted that the active offensive by the rebels in Syria reportedly promises Israel only short-term benefits and potentially significant problems in the future.
Among the advantages of the situation is the fact that the infrastructure built by Iran in Syria is now mostly captured or severely damaged. The pro-Iranian "Hezbollah" will redirect all available forces to Syria in an attempt to protect Assad's regime. This assessment was provided by Israeli intelligence officers and specialists, who pointed out that the operational freedom of the IDF to reduce Hezbollah's combat potential in Lebanon will significantly expand.
However, among the downsides, intelligence sources cite the potential chaos that may ensue following the fall of Assad's regime in Syria. Netanyahu is being persuaded, according to the publication, that this will create a direct threat to Israel itself.
"Intelligence leaders noted that recent events seem positive. However, they warned that the collapse of Assad's regime will likely generate chaos, in which military threats to Israel will arise," the publication states.
It is worth recalling that the Syrian army of Bashar Assad's regime and opposition groups, which had ceased hostilities following a ceasefire agreement signed in Syria in March 2020, have once again entered a period of conflict after large-scale attacks by the "Hayat Tahrir al-Sham" group. The rebels took control of 550 square kilometers and 70 settlements in Aleppo and Idlib within three days.
On the night of November 30, 2024, Russian Aerospace Forces struck the Syrian city of Aleppo, which had come under rebel control. This was the first time since 2016.
