В Евросоюзе обсуждают возможность восстановить поставки российского трубопроводного газа в рамках мирного урегулирования в Украине.

European officials are debating whether to resume the supply of Russian pipeline gas to the EU as part of a potential settlement aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

This was reported by the Financial Times, citing sources.

Europe set a record for natural gas imports from Russia in 2024 – The GuardianIn 2024, Europe achieved a record import of 17.8 million tons of natural gas from Russia, which is 2 million tons more than last year.

Proponents of purchasing Russian gas argue that it will "lead to lower energy prices in Europe, encourage Moscow to come to the negotiating table, and provide both sides with a reason to implement and maintain a ceasefire."

However, even at the preliminary discussion stage, the idea has met with backlash from Ukraine's closest allies in the European Union.

According to three officials informed about the talks, some German and Hungarian officials are in favor of the idea, as well as other capitals that see it as a way to reduce European energy costs.

"Some major member states are putting pressure on energy prices, and this is certainly one way to reduce them," one official stated.

The publication notes that the discussion of resuming Russian gas supplies has sparked anger among Brussels officials and diplomats from several Eastern European countries, many of whom have spent the last three years working to reduce imports of Russian energy resources.

"This is madness. How foolish can we be to even consider this as an option?", said one official.

It is worth recalling that it was previously reported that the European Union's new sanctions package will not fully prohibit the purchase of Russian liquefied natural gas.

Meanwhile, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is demanding that Ukraine resume the transit of Russian gas to Europe. Otherwise, he threatens to block all decisions regarding Ukraine in the European Union, halt humanitarian aid and electricity supplies, and revoke benefits for Ukrainian refugees.
