The Verkhovna Rada was unable to adopt resolution No. 13039 regarding the support of democracy amidst the aggression of the Russian Federation, which would highlight the impossibility of holding elections during martial law.

This was reported by MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak on Telegram.

It is known that the document received support from 218 deputies, although 226 votes are required for its approval.

The resolution stated, among other things, that the powers of President Volodymyr Zelensky should continue until the end of the martial law regime.

“The Parliament of Ukraine emphasizes the need to adhere to the principle of institutional continuity of power as stipulated by Ukrainian laws, especially under the legal regime of martial law, and notes that President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky must exercise his powers until the newly elected President of Ukraine takes office in accordance with the first part of Article 108 of the Constitution of Ukraine,” Zheleznyak quoted.

Recall that recently, former U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Ukraine should hold elections if it wants a seat at the negotiating table. Additionally, he referred to President Zelensky as a “dictator without elections.”

Zelensky responded that the Trump administration began talking about elections in Ukraine following calls from Russia, and that this is solely linked to disinformation from the Kremlin.

He also assured that he is prepared to resign as president if it would mean peace in Ukraine or in exchange for Ukraine's membership in NATO.
