The government has renamed 22 geographical locations in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. Some of these have received their historical Crimean Tatar names.
This was reported by the President's Office in Ukraine for the ARC, referring to Cabinet Order No. 49 dated January 17, 2025, “On the Renaming of Certain Geographical Objects.”
The agency stated that it, along with the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory and the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, actively participated in the development of the resolution by engaging in working consultations with interested parties.
The list of objects proposed for renaming was agreed upon by interested parties in accordance with legal requirements, and additional communications were carried out.
The complete list of renamings in Crimea is as follows:
“Decolonization, including the decolonization of toponymy, is an important part of Ukraine's memory policy, and the return of historical names in Crimea is directly linked to the protection of the rights of the indigenous peoples of Ukraine,” the office concluded.
Previously, leaders of the Crimean Tatar people called on the Ukrainian authorities to restore historical toponyms in Crimea.
Just before, ZMINA reported that the Council for Cognitive Decolonization of Crimea had established its priorities for 2025.
