The government has renamed 22 geographical sites in Crimea, according to the Office of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.

The Office of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea reported this, referencing Cabinet Resolution No. 49 dated January 17, 2025, regarding the renaming of certain geographical entities.

The government has renamed 22 geographical locations in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. Some of these have received their historical Crimean Tatar names.

This was reported by the President's Office in Ukraine for the ARC, referring to Cabinet Order No. 49 dated January 17, 2025, “On the Renaming of Certain Geographical Objects.”

The agency stated that it, along with the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory and the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, actively participated in the development of the resolution by engaging in working consultations with interested parties.

The list of objects proposed for renaming was agreed upon by interested parties in accordance with legal requirements, and additional communications were carried out.

The complete list of renamings in Crimea is as follows:

  • the tract Avrorovka – to the tract Bashbek;
  • the ravine Artemovka – to the ravine Toka;
  • the tract Bagrationovo – to the tract Konrat;
  • the river Vorontsovka – to the river Kuchuk-Chatyrlyk;
  • the railway station Kirovskoe – to the railway station Islyam-Terek;
  • the Krasnogvardeysky Canal – to the Kurmansky Canal, and its Krasnogvardeyskoye branch – to the Kurmanskoye branch;
  • the railway station Krasnopartizansk – to the railway station Borangar;
  • the railway station Krasnoperekopsk – to the railway station Yany Kapu;
  • the railway station Krasnofolotskoye – to the railway station Ichki;
  • the tract Krasnoflotskoye – to the tract Kainash;
  • the Kutuzovsky Fountain – to the spring Syung-Su;
  • the tract Lazo – to the tract Kirmachi;
  • the tract Lomonovo – to the tract Bai-Kogenli;
  • the tract Peredovoe – to the tract Tup-Tarkhan;
  • the tract Polyushkino – to the tract Burchi;
  • the ravine Polyushkina – to the ravine Burchi;
  • the tract Pravdinoe – to the tract Ak-Tash;
  • the tract Pyatiletka – to the tract Kopeyka;
  • the Suvorovsky Oak – to the Oak “Four Brothers”;
  • the Red Stone – to the Kyzyl-Tash;
  • the tract Chkalovo – to the tract Biyuk-Kardzhav.

“Decolonization, including the decolonization of toponymy, is an important part of Ukraine's memory policy, and the return of historical names in Crimea is directly linked to the protection of the rights of the indigenous peoples of Ukraine,” the office concluded.

Previously, leaders of the Crimean Tatar people called on the Ukrainian authorities to restore historical toponyms in Crimea.
