India showcased the exotic MArG 155-BR wheeled self-propelled howitzer on a 4x4 chassis at IDEX 2025, designed for combat in mountainous terrain.

The Indian defense industry exports its own manufactured artillery systems, but their design and specifications truly appear exotic.
Индия на IDEX 2025 представила экзотичную колесную САУ MArG 155-BR на шасси 4х4, разработанную для ведения боевых действий в горах.

At the IDEX 2025 exhibition currently taking place in the United Arab Emirates, India showcased its wheeled self-propelled artillery system MArG 155-BR, which has a caliber of 155 millimeters; according to some reports, Armenia has already acquired this type of self-propelled gun to enhance its artillery capabilities.

The uniqueness of the situation lies in the fact that the Indian MArG 155-BR is based on a 4x4 chassis, making it quite an unusual scenario. This self-propelled gun is currently the only known 155-mm caliber artillery system in the world that relies on a two-axle chassis.

This self-propelled gun is discussed in a publication by Army Recognition, which provides the following details. The aforementioned MArG 155-BR from the Indian defense company Kalyani Group features a standard barrel length of 39 calibers; however, the model displayed at the exhibition has a barrel length of 45 calibers, indicating an increase in firing range compared to the base variant.

With its exotic 4x4 base, the Indian wheeled self-propelled gun MArG 155-BR has a combat weight of only 20 tons, allowing for excellent mobility across various terrains, which is crucial during operations in mountainous areas, for example.

At this point, Defense Express would like to add that according to other known information, the Indian wheeled self-propelled gun MArG 155-BR has a carried ammunition load of 18 shells, with a firing range of up to 24 kilometers, based on the Indian truck Ashok Leyland Mk 4.

The firing rate data looks quite interesting - the first 3 shots can be fired in 30 seconds, 12 shots in 3 minutes, and 42 shots in 60 minutes.

It is also worth noting that in the fall of 2023, the first reports emerged indicating that Armenia acquired an unspecified number of 155-mm caliber artillery systems, with the aforementioned MArG 155-BR also mentioned.

The concept of a compact wheeled 155-mm self-propelled gun on a 4x4 chassis is intriguing. However, it is likely to be particularly relevant for countries that require artillery for operations in mountainous terrain, and secondarily for potential users who need a small, air-transportable self-propelled gun for expeditionary missions.
