As of January 2025, the number of Armed Forces of Ukraine is approximately 880,000 personnel.
This information was shared by President Volodymyr Zelensky during a joint press conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
"You know, today there are about 600,000 Russian troops on the territory of our state. It may be slightly less, depending on how our guys have performed today. As for the Ukrainian army, it currently consists of 880,000. But 880,000 – are defending the entire territory," he stated.
According to him, due to the need to defend all of Ukraine's territory, the enemy maintains a numerical advantage in some directions.
Zelensky also emphasized that he supports the initiative to introduce foreign contingents, but if such forces are involved, it is essential to understand how the Ukrainian army will develop thereafter.
"We are not playing games with messages about reductions today. Because it is precisely such a large army that is currently holding back the enemy. This is also a serious, and for now – the only guarantee of security. Plus assistance, plus the weapons of our partners. Because maintaining a large army is also part of these agreements," the president added.
We remind you that the Armed Forces of Ukraine ranked 20th in the annual list of the strongest armies in the world according to Global Firepower.
Earlier, President Zelensky announced new reshuffles in the command of the Armed Forces.
