The U.S. House of Representatives committee, led by Republicans, has concluded a two-year investigation into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic and published its final report on Monday.
This was reported by CNN.
The 520-page report from the special subcommittee on the coronavirus pandemic concludes that COVID-19 "most likely originated in a laboratory in Wuhan, China." This theory is supported by the fact that the virus has biological characteristics not found in nature, as well as reports of illness among researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in the fall of 2019.
"By virtually all scientific measures, if there were evidence of natural origin, it would have surfaced by now," the report states.
Most U.S. intelligence agencies assert that the virus was not genetically modified, but it remains unclear how the pandemic began. An intelligence analysis released last year indicated that both laboratory and natural origins are possible. However, no federal agency in the U.S. believes that the virus was created as biological weapon.
The new report also criticized the World Health Organization's efforts to combat the pandemic, claiming it prioritized China's political interests over its mission to aid people worldwide and even allowed the Communist Party to control the investigation into the virus's origins.
The report further critiques the general mitigation measures for COVID-19—social distancing and mask mandates. It argues that "prolonged lockdowns caused immeasurable harm not only to the American economy but also to the mental and physical health of Americans, particularly negatively impacting young citizens."
Recall that the FBI stated in March of last year that the likely cause of the COVID-19 pandemic was a "laboratory incident" in the Chinese city of Wuhan.
At that time, U.S. President Joe Biden signed a law to declassify information related to the origins of COVID-19.
