Russian military personnel and diplomats urgently began to leave the Syrian capital, Damascus, following the initial armed unrest.
This information comes from the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
According to the GUR, the opposition is actively advancing in the southern part of the country, with the first urban battles taking place in the cities of Hama, Homs, and Suwayda.
“The military contingent of the aggressor state, Russia, fled from Hama and evacuated to the 'Khmeimim' base. The head of the coordination headquarters located in Khmeimim, Colonel General Alexander Zhuravlev, confirmed that the situation has spiraled out of control of the Assad regime. Additionally, the Russians abandoned the military base in the city of Khan Shaykhun, leaving behind a significant arsenal of weapons and equipment,” intelligence sources reported.
On December 1, Russian aircraft conducted airstrikes in the Khan Shaykhun area: the GUR believes the objective of the attack was to destroy military equipment that had fallen into the hands of opposition forces.
It is worth noting that earlier, the GUR stated that in light of significant losses suffered by Russian troops in Syria, the Kremlin dismissed the commander of the group, General Sergey Kiselyov.
On November 30, the Syrian government army announced its withdrawal from the city of Aleppo in the northwest of the country, which has begun to be taken over by the rebels. According to the latest reports, the majority of the city has already been captured by the group “Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham.”
