Georgia drifts towards Russia: why mass street protests are happening in TbilisiIn Georgia, large-scale protests have been ongoing for several weeks. The reasons and the world's reaction are detailed in the infographic.

The Ministry called on the Georgian authorities to respect the citizens' right to peaceful protest and to refrain from violence.

“The escalation of the internal political situation in Georgia is a result of numerous violations during the parliamentary elections on October 26. All recorded violations by international observers must be investigated, and those responsible held accountable,” the statement read.

The agency also emphasized its disappointment with the Georgian government's decision to suspend negotiations on EU membership.

“This decision, along with the use of force against a peaceful protest, is indicative of the rollback of democratic processes in the country in favor of Moscow. It is no coincidence that the Georgian leadership has already received public praise from the Kremlin for actions contrary to the European choice of its own people,” the Ministry stated.

It is worth noting that yesterday, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced that the country is suspending discussions on opening negotiations with the European Union regarding membership until 2028.

Following this, large-scale protests began in Tbilisi and other cities. Clashes occurred between law enforcement and protesters near the parliament building in the capital.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported the detention of 43 individuals on administrative charges. There are also reports of injuries on both the law enforcement and protester sides.
