The Parliament of South Korea has adopted a resolution to revoke the state of martial law declared by President Yoon Suk-yeol.
This was reported by Korea Herald.
It is noted that the document was supported by all 190 lawmakers present. The majority of them represent the opposition "Democratic Party."
According to South Korean law, the president is now required to rescind his declaration of martial law.
At the same time, special units of the Korean police and military are attempting to break into the parliament building.
Civilians opposed to the president's decision are taking to the streets of the South Korean capital. Clashes are occurring between protesters and military personnel in the square in front of the parliament.
The mayor of Seoul, Oh Se-hoon, has also expressed opposition to the imposition of martial law.
“The declaration of martial law must be revoked. As mayor, I will do everything in my power to maintain the daily lives of our citizens,” he wrote on his Facebook account.
It is worth recalling that today the President of South Korea announced the declaration of martial law to "eradicate pro-North Korean forces and maintain constitutional order." Additionally, he accused the country's opposition of controlling the parliament.
It should also be noted that tensions have increased recently on the Korean Peninsula. In October, North Korea designated South Korea as a "hostile state". The National Assembly of the country has introduced corresponding amendments to the constitution.
According to media reports, a full-scale war on the Korean Peninsula could result in a loss of 3.9% of global GDP.
