Given the realities of war, it is crucial for Ukrainian women to acquire technical specialties – not only to ensure national competitiveness but also to strengthen the country's defense capabilities. However, this fact does not encourage girls to choose technical and engineering professions.
This is highlighted in a study by Texty.
Journalists, analyzing data on enrollment in higher educational institutions for the years 2022-2024, noted a trend where girls, even with high scores in mathematics from school tests, predominantly enroll in philology.
The study indicates that when examining how boys and girls perform on school subject tests (VNO/NMT), there is no distinct humanitarian or technical orientation among them.
However, the difference starts with the fact that among the tests chosen, boys more frequently prefer physics and geography, while girls opt for foreign languages, biology, and literature.
One of the mandatory tests is mathematics. Among those who scored above 163 points, there are 6720 girls and 6594 boys. Notably, most girls with good math results enrolled in philology and medicine, while boys chose computer science and software engineering.
Moreover, boys who achieved high scores in foreign languages still choose technical specialties, while girls prefer philology.
Overall, the statistics are striking: for instance, in the specialty of "Automobile Transport" in 2024, 99% of enrollees were boys and only 1% were girls. In preschool education, on average, 95% of the enrollees were girls. A similar situation was observed in previous years.
Gender-neutral fields such as statistics, political science, economics, history, philosophy, banking, etc., are also noted.
Recall that in 2022, Ukraine conducted the international PISA education quality assessment for the second time. More details on the results can be found in the material by "Slovo and Delo."
