January 2025 has been recorded as the hottest January in history. Scientists had anticipated it would be cooler than January 2024 due to the cooling weather cycle of La Niña in the tropical Pacific.
This is reported by the European Climate Service "Copernicus."
According to the service, January has become the third hottest month on record: the surface air temperature reached 13.23°C, which is 1.75°C above the pre-industrial average.
In Europe, the average temperature in January was 1.80°C, which is 2.51°C higher than the average for January 1991–2020. The temperatures were above average in Southern and Eastern Europe, while Iceland, the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Northern France recorded below-average temperatures.
Outside of Europe, temperatures were higher than average in northeastern and northwestern Canada, Alaska, and Siberia. They were also above average in southern South America, Africa, and most of Australia and Antarctica.
Temperatures were notably lower than average in the United States and the far eastern regions of Russia.
As a reminder, scientists confirmed that 2024 was the hottest year on record.
According to a new study, by the end of the century, extreme temperatures could lead to the deaths of 2.3 million people in European cities.
