The Collins English Dictionary has chosen "brat" as the word of the year. It refers to a person with a "confident, independent, and hedonistic attitude."
This information is available on the dictionary's website.
"Brat has become one of the most discussed words of 2024. It has resonated with people worldwide, and brat summer has established itself as an aesthetic and lifestyle", the authors noted.
The term gained popularity following the release of the album of the same name by British singer Charli XCX, who pioneered brat culture. It was also used by the campaign team of US presidential candidate Kamala Harris to "revitalize" social media and engage young voters.
This year, only one political term made it to the list of popular words—Supermajority.
As a reminder, last year the most popular word according to Collins was "artificial intelligence."
The American Webster's Dictionary declared "authentic" as the word of 2023, while the Cambridge Dictionary chose "hallucinate."
