On Sunday, December 1, Joe Biden announced a full and unconditional pardon for his son Hunter Biden, who was convicted of illegal possession of firearms and tax violations.
This was reported by CNN citing the White House.
The decision, made just weeks before the end of his presidential term, absolves Hunter of all federal charges that could relate to his activities from 2014 to 2024, including cases of unpaid taxes and firearm possession.
“Today I signed a pardon for my son Hunter,” Biden stated, emphasizing that the prosecution of his son was “selective and unfair.” The President also accused political opponents in Congress of trying to use the cases against Hunter to damage his reputation.
This pardon means that planned court hearings, during which Hunter Biden could have faced actual prison time, will be canceled. The decision also encompasses his activities on the board of the Ukrainian gas company Burisma, which previously sparked significant controversy in the U.S.
Biden's statement has sparked debate, as the President had previously publicly promised not to interfere in legal matters involving his son. However, the White House noted that the President concluded the accusations were politically motivated. Hunter Biden himself pleaded guilty to nine tax-related crimes and was convicted for illegal possession of a firearm.
Joe Biden added that he made this decision as both a president and a father, highlighting that Hunter has been struggling with addiction for many years and has endured the pressures of public condemnation.
It is worth noting that Hunter Biden is accused of tax evasion totaling $1.4 million, spending millions on drugs, escort services, luxury cars, and other extravagant items from 2016 to October 2020. He has pleaded not guilty to these charges.
As reported, in September 2023, Hunter Biden was charged with possession of a firearm in the state of Delaware. The 53-year-old son of President Joe Biden has pleaded not guilty in the firearm case.
