On the night of January 13 to 14, Ukrainians celebrate the Old New Year. Since this holiday is not a religious one, its date continues to be observed even after the transition of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church to the new Julian calendar. However, the celebrations of Malanka and Vasyl, which previously took place on January 13 and 14 respectively, have now been moved to December 31 and January 1.

- Skimping on food. On the contrary, the feast should be rich with various hearty dishes to feed the whole family and guests.
- Sitting at the festive table in dirty and torn clothes — leads to the loss of luck and well-being.
Traditions and signs for January 14
On this day, it was traditionally customary to hold lavish feasts with a variety of dishes. There was a saying: "As the table is set, so will the year be." Hostesses prepared a variety of baked goods, rich kutya, as well as meat dishes including aspic, sausage, and baked ham.
