Chevrons and unit insignias often have a long history. Specifically, the 28th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after the Knights of the Winter Campaign boasts a history of over a century. The brigade is named in honor of the participants of the First Winter Campaign (raids into the rear of the Red and Volunteer Armies during the First Liberation Struggles).
This symbolism is central — the chevron features a black cross with a golden border. These elements are part of the award known as the Iron Cross "For the Winter Campaign and Battles" of the Ukrainian People's Republic.
At its center is an element colored like the national flag, featuring the symbol of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, to which the brigade belongs. This is a simplified depiction of the trident. The brigade's motto is "With Will and Iron." Previously, before being named after the Knights of the Winter Campaign, the brigade had a more colorful chevron.
